Injury to the spine must be considered any time there has been an accident involving the neck or back. Permanent paralysis may be avoided if the injured person is immobilized and transported correctly.

Signs of a spinal injury include:

• Severe pain in the neck or back.

• Bruises on the head, neck, shoulders, or back.

• Weakness, tingling, or numbness in the arms or legs.

• Loss of bowel or bladder control.

• Bleeding or clear fluid discharge from the ears or nose (not due to a cut or direct blow to the nose).

• Loss of consciousness.

  • If you suspect a spinal injury, do not move the person unless there is an immediate threat to life, such as fire. Don't drag victims from automobile accidents.

  • If the person is in immediate danger, and must be moved, do whatever you can to move the person's head, neck, and shoulders together as a unit while you move him or her to safety.

  • If the person was injured in a diving accident, don't pull the injured person from the water, because you may cause permanent damage. Float the person face up in the water until help arrives. The water will act as a splint and keep the person's spine immobile.
